I've wanted to shoot here at sunrise for a long time. Life gets in the way sometimes with projects. Enter a private photo tour client. If I'm gonna get up to teach I might as well make it worth it. He was skeptical of heading out as it was fairly clear on the north shore and didnt want to get skunked. Once we got to the parking lot of Anahola Bay it was apparent the clouds were up to something. A cold front was poised to cross the state later in the day and I thought to myself...that kinda looks like a lenticular cloud. I've never seen them in person, only through other's photographs and longed to be able to capture them. They are amazing clouds that form under very specific circumstances. As luck would have it as the sun started to rise it lit up, what I'm pretty sure is a lenticular (very rare for Hawaii), right over Kalalea Mountain. I chose this composition to give some feel and motion to the foreground and let the cloud balance with the rocks at bottom. Colors are courtesy of nature
Makes getting up for sunrise not feel so early when the pieces to the puzzle come together
I like the way you've exploited the portrait format to emphasise the depth of the image, from waves breaking at the photographer's feet to the ethereal distance of high altitude clouds.
My only good photo of one is: [link] ...
The sunrise makes the picture very special
