So this hike has been almost a year in the making for me. Needing someone to take me (a group of us in this case) as the trail is a bit tricky. Things finally lined up today (1.24.10) and even though I missed football, my luck held true.
Destination was Makaleha Falls, deep up river on Kauai's east side. I had seen a painter creating this scene and immediately I knew I had to get there. We had a cold front pass and stall just to our east which left perfect cloudy conditions. The trail is up through bamboo, hau ("how") forest, and up the river (which now has debris all in it from the severe flooding in nov).
I could probably go on for a while but basically...yea, this place is awesome. I will be revisiting when it hasnt been so dry as the back valley waterfalls were not going.
The bruised part came when I slipped on what I thought was not a slippery rock nailing myself just below my knee...nothing too bad. Tripod helped break the fall :-P THEN...I do the same freakin' thing down the river except this time when i put my hand down to break my fall I felt a pop and when I looked down my pinky was dislocated at the second nuckle. My immediate reaction was to pull on it and pop it back in so the whole thing was about 5s. Good times. In any case, well worth the battering, and lessons for not being over confident hoping on river rocks.
This is the pot of 'gold' (blue-green) at the end of the rainbow. Only nature could make water this color. Wicked stuff.

I hope you will agree and enjoy!
