Venturing out on a scouting trip along Kauai's south coast back in Sept '10 I found this incredible formation. The cliffs are petrified sand dunes. This opening allowed the waves to occasionally crash through the gap. Midday is usually the worst time to take photos and this was very harsh. I waited for a cloud to block some of the light to even out the shadow/highlight areas and then good post processing to get the look you see.

The real photograph from this place will be when I can time/capture the sun rising through the tiny space at the far end...which it does over the course of it's yearly journey. Here's to projects!

Thanks!

Are you thinking on making a color version? I think that would give more context and increase the impact of this photo even more. Great work, congratas!

Nope...b/w only. Much more texture and coherence. Color will be in the future...with the rising sun :)

A bit too much contrast and texture for me at this size but I can see it really working on a large scale
