Having photographed the milky way over the pier before I had the opportunity to do it again with a different position. I parked my car on the pier and put the brights on then took one photograph w/ the lights on and one with them off to make sure I could balance the light properly with the stars. The mist was the result of the large surf coming in being lit up by the car lights.
Well, once again this is a rare critique of a photograph that I don't have much to be critical of. The only thing that may have made this better is perhaps a gradient filter placed low around the horizon to stop down the brightness of the terrain just a bit. The real draw here is the absolutely gorgeous shot you've captured of the milky way, and the brightness from the road and structure takes away from it just a tad. I'm really shocked that a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600 didn't make an overly-granulated shot! I must also state that I am extremely jealous that you have a very obvious lack of light pollution in your night sky for this shot. If we could all be so lucky...
Can you see the milky way with the naked eye? ive always wondered how people shoot this. Did you look up and see this or is this just the product of long exposure? Ive never shot stars at such a high ISO before because im sure the noise would be outrageous on my XSi verses your badass 1ds.
